Floating But Not Adrift: Lake Tanganyika Floating Health Clinic Model

By Lisa Smith

For many, Lake Tanganyika is the most recognizable body of water on Earth – holding 20 percent of the planet’s fresh water. But for Dr. Amy Lehman, founder of the Lake Tanganyika Floating Health Clinic, the lake represents much more. With such a large portion of the world’s fresh water, Lake Tanganyika will most certainly increase in significance, as concerns for water security grow. Additionally, the lake serves as an important ecosystem of biodiversity, home to a large variety of unique plant and animal species.  Bordering Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Zambia, the lake also defies norms and borders as it unites a community of people potentially more alike in their past and present customs than with others on the opposite end of their country. And, Dr. Lehman builds on this populations’ unity through the floating clinic’s outreach. Click here to read the full article and watch the video of Amy’s interview »

Dr. Nishtar sought to leverage telecommunications technology to put vital treatments within reach of Pakistan’s poorest citizens, who often fall into a cycle of further debt and poverty when faced with unexpected health care bills.  Read the entire article >>

AMY LEHMAN SHARES HER THOUGHTS ON MOBILE HEALTH IN AFRICA

As a practitioner in an ultra-rural location, I have long followed developments in mHealth and telemedicine and been excited by the possibilities. Unfortunately, I work in a place that is still largely without cell phone access, much less broad-band, so issues regarding connectivity, 3G availability, bandwidth are of paramount importance to me in discussing how mHealth can change the health care landscape.
