LTFHC Founder Amy Lehman participated on a Global Health panel during the 10th  annual GE conference for senior women business leaders themed “Leading & Learning,” held May 7-9 at GE’s Leadership Training Campus in Ossining, NY. This event brought together some of the most prominent women in the world to discuss global trends, innovation, leadership, and growth challenges. Leading & Learning provides a unique forum for senior female executives to learn, grow, and network.

What inspired you to set up the Lake Tanganyika Floating Health Clinic?

I went to school with a number of students from Africa and I had always been fascinated by the place. To me, going into the heart of Africa was the ultimate adventure.

I  travelled around the Lake Tanganyika area by boat a few years back and while there a typhoon caused the airstrip to be washed away, so we ended up stuck! I traversed the coastline and saw there was a large population living around the shores of the lake, in parts of the Congo, Burundi and Western Tanzania, that was completely cut off from the rest of the world. The road systems were poor and there were major supply chain issues. The only way to reach all of those people was via boat and that’s when I had the idea for the Floating Clinic.

This just in from our DRC staff (regarding last week’s telecommunications install):

“So, today the [Ministry] vaccination campaign has started and all the health centers along the lake where we installed the HF radios submitted their daily report very early, which is great!”

Special thanks to our core install team: Augustine Kubikonse, Vincent TshoweJoel Frushone, James Millard, and Chris Horsfall, who, while working under challenging conditions, completed the install in record time.

LTFHC’s upgrade of the Moba Territory Ministry of Health communications network was an overwhelming success!

DRC Communications InstallLast week, with the help of local governmental officials, village chiefs and the population, the LTFHC installed HF radios, antennas and solar power systems at eight remote DRC health clinics on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.  These health clinics, all of which are only accessible by water, are now able to communicate with the Moba Regional Hospital, where the LTFHC also installed a radio, and each other.  Stay tuned for a detailed report..

Amy Lehman to Speak at Dialogue for Action Africa – June 11th in Libreville, Gabon

LTFHC founder, Amy Lehman, is honored to participate in the Dialogue for Action Africa, presented by Cecila Attias Foundation For Women, in collaboration with Sylvia Bongo Ondimba the First Lady of Gabon, to be held on June 11, 2012 in Libreville, Gabon. It will be the first event of its kind that brings together a well-rounded community of women and men from the African continent and around the world in the fields of business, health, education, non-profit, government, media, and security to collaborate and make a Plan for Action for Africa.

Guess where our team is this week?

We’re in the midst of conducting a communications install in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).  This Network will connect the Moba Regional Hospital to several Health Area clinics on the DRC side of Lake Tanganyika, which otherwise had no form of external communication.  Stay tuned for more updates and photos..

One step closer..

Last month, our team traveled to Kigoma, Tanzania to have our first meeting with our US-based and Tanzanian ship-building teams, which include Alion Science and Technology, MMIC, and Songoro Marine.  A major step forward for the LTFHC!

LTFHC founder, Dr. Amy Lehman, was honored to be selected to share her story through MAKERS: Women Who Make America, a landmark digital video and broadcast initiative from AOL and PBS that aims to become the largest collection of women’s stories ever captured on video.  Launched today, MAKERS.com features exclusive access to compelling stories from trailblazing women, who are driving and realizing social change.  The project will debut as a 3-part documentary on PBS in early 2013.
