While working toward our ultimate goal of the operational floating clinic, LTFHC has already begun programmatic work through outreach projects in the region that have focused on the most prevalent conditions in the basin. We have conducted large-scale mosquito bed net distributions, integrated malaria prevention education programs, and cholera treatment.
Women’s Health Outreach – October 2011
In an effort to help address the human, social, and economic costs of malaria in the DRC, the LTFHC created Katanga Kicks Malaria 2010 (KKM), a unique, innovative, and multi-phase anti–malaria educational outreach program tailored specifically for the Great Lakes Region of Katanga Province. Positioning the “Hope is a Game-Changer” soccer balls in Moba Port for eventual distribution to the Health Areas was key to this soccer ball–based malaria education project. It was also a herculean task. The LTFHC successfully completed the nearly 1,000km overland journey in five days, and 400 soccer balls were delivered to KKM coaches to distribute to all the primary schools in each Health Area, as well as soccer clubs in Moba Plateau and Moba Port.
